With learn to lessons for entry level paddlers to craft specific awards for paddlers with intermediate skills and Instructor qualifications on offer in a variety of crafts, there's not much we don't do when it comes to Paddlesports.

Learn to - 4 week course

Our 4 week Learn to craft specific courses are ideal for beginners looking for a solid start to their Paddling journey. Suitable for those over the age of 18 who wish to increase their confidence and independence on the water in Kayaks, Canoes or Paddleboards.

Session 1 - Buzzard Valley - On the lake - 1 hour 30

  • Equipment

  • PPE

  • Entering and exiting the water

  • Foundation Paddling; Forward, backwards and sideways strokes

  • Start award

Session 2 - Fazeley Canal - On the Canal - 1 hour 30

  • Variation of waterways

  • Etiquette and other users

  • Efficient paddling

  • Obstacles

  • Environment - Leave no trace

Session 3 - Buzzards Valley - Theory and lake - 2 hours

  • On land theory lesson - Trip planning and safety equipment 

  • On the lake safety session - Self rescues and foundation peer rescues

  • Paddle safer award

Session 4 - River Tame, Tamworth Castle - On the River - 1 hour 30

  • Skills into practise

  • Flat water skills

  • Eddies & crossing flow

Paddle safer for Parents

This course is designed with families in mind, to give you the knowledge and confidence to enjoy safe paddling trips with your family in a variety of crafts. Run by Judith from Omega, this is an opportunity to gain insight into over a decade of paddling experience, leading groups of children and adults across the UK and abroad.

Full day - 5 hours 30 - Buzzards Valley

Course content

  • Meet and greet - Introductions and group aims

  • Dry theory session; equipment, environment and journey planning

  • Progressing paddling skills, looking at a variety of paddle strokes for efficient paddling

  • The fun bit, practicing your rescues, problem solving, calling for help (You will get wet!)

  •  Wrap up, review and personal reflection

Taking you on the next steps towards becoming an independent paddler, for a fun and safe time on the water. Developing an understanding of the factors which affect your paddling; developing your decision making and practical skills, giving you confidence on the water.

Craft: Kayak, Canoe or SUP

Your Explore Award (was BC 2 star) gives you ownership; allowing you to choose where you move next in the world of paddlesport.

Learning to make confident choices with this individualised approach. Recognising your ability to independently paddle your chosen craft in a sheltered water environment.

Paddle Safer award


1/2 day

Craft: Kayak, Canoe or SUP

The Paddle Safer course is designed for anyone new to paddling, or relatively inexperienced to paddling, wanting to gain knowledge and raise their awareness of paddling safely in a sheltered water environment, in or on the craft that they paddle. Typical craft would include kayaks, canoes, stand up paddleboards, sit on tops and inflatables.

Touring award

Your Touring Award (was BC 3 star touring) endorses your skill, judgment and decision making required to have a successful day on a river or estuary. You will be confident in planning and undertaking journeys with proficient skills to be in control throughout. Price based on a group of 4.

Touring award

As a Multi-Day Touring Award holder, you will have the ability to apply your choices to an enjoyable multi-day trip on a variety of waters including canals, lochs/lakes, estuaries and sections of rivers up to grade 2. Price based on a group of 4.

SUP sheltered
water award

1 day

Craft: SUP

This award is designed to develop your understanding of how to plan and paddle a Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) in sheltered water, using the appropriate abilities and decision making skills to travel safely on your pre-determined route. Price based on a group of 4.

PSRC - Paddlesport Safety & Rescue Course

 This British Canoeing course aims to provide paddlers with key safety and rescue skills required to operate safely and to be able to deal with common problems in a sheltered water environment. This course is designed for all paddlers irrespective of their chosen craft; Kayak, Canoe, Paddleboard or Sit on top. The objective is to introduce, explore and practice simple strategies and safe skills that can provide the paddlers with the tools to solve common paddling issues. 

Full day - 7 hour - Buzzards Valley

Course content

The course content focuses on rescuing from the paddlers specific craft and covers 6 modules within the 6 hour programme:

  • Clothing and equipment

  • Safety frameworks

  • Contact and Towing rescues

  • Self rescues

  • Deep water rescues

  • Reflection and development 


  • Explore award or equivalent ability

What to bring:

  • Boat or board appropriate for the course

  • Paddle

  • BA & helmet

  • Extra's appropriate for your award (towline, safety knife, towline etc)

  • Water

  • Snacks

  • Full change of clothes, shoes and a towel

(We offer kit for hire including, Kayaks, SUPs and personal protective equipment)

What to wear:

  • Wetsuit or Dry suit

  • Wet boots or trainers

  • Seasonal extra's (Sun cream/gloves)
